Release Notes

You see them everywhere you go, on the rural Interstates or in the heart of the largest city. The 18-wheeled tractor-trailer rigs are a key part of our economy and our lives. This album is dedicated to the men and women who run the roads and keep the world moving.

The idea for the album was conceived in April 2000 by Big Al Weekley, a 20 year veteran truck driver, musician and syndicated radio host. Weekly contacted singer-songwriter Bill Napier, co-author of the classic song "Truck Drivers Queen," to record a trucker’s album. He enthusiastically accepted.

But the album was put on hold only a few days later when Napier passed away unexpectedly. Big Al knew he would eventually record the album and felt he would know when the time was right.

Two years later, Weekley decided it was time to put the album in action. He assembled an incredible lineup of top musicians and recorded "For The Long Haul: Songs For the Open Road." The album is dedicated to the memory of Bill Napier.

Weekley meant business. The album begins with the legendary Dave Dudley performing "Drivin’ Trains" which was written by Dudley and wife Marie specifically for Long Haul. This was the first time in Dudley's long career that he recorded a song using an all acoustic format.

Joining Dudley is another familiar name, The Auctioneer - Leroy Van Dyke, performing his humorous "Who's Gonna Run The Truck Stop In Tuba City When I'm Gone." Long Haul is the first album in which both Dudley and Van Dyke appear.

To put a different perspective on the theme, the strong and powerful voice of Valerie Smith sings of a female truck driver who has recently broken up with her partner, and finds herself "Alone In The Still Of The Night." Master guitarist Bryan Sutton appears as a guest on this cut.

Completing the album is "18 Wheels Roll On", a Big Al Weekley composition written for this release.

"For The Long Haul" includes 11 songs tapping the talent of James King, Chris Jones, Don Rigsby, Kenny Smith, Ken Orrick and Tony King, to name a few. Long Haul weaves some well known trucking classics with memorable new material to produce a fresh release of all acoustic trucking music. This album is simply a must for truckers.

But whether you are driving the biggest rig on the road or the smallest car, Long Haul will make the trip a little shorter and the road a little smoother.
